Building Coping Skills

In mid-August, when most of us were thinking about ourselves and how we could squeeze out the last bits of summer fun, 8-year-old Jake Monaco was thinking of others. He was looking for a way to support children, and he found it by contacting us here at the Bridge Family Center: He collected materials for coping-skills boxes.

“Watching Jake deliver boxes upon boxes of crayons, bubbles, sketch pads, stickers, books, watercolor sets, and stress balls, was a beautiful thing for us to witness this morning,” says Director of Marketing & Communications, Amanda Aronson. “His mom had explained to him that when our counselors work with young children, they will often sit with them and help them put together a coping-skills box, so they have one place to go for ideas to calm themselves when they feel stressed or have a worry.”

During his visit, Jake also toured our West Hartford Counseling Center, met members of the staff, and learned about the many ways the Bridge helps people in our region. Our thanks go out to Jake and his family for thinking of our community’s youngest members, and for reminding us all that if we want to raise children who take care of each other, it’s never too early to start helping them learn how.
