The Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI)

Congratulations to our 21 Newest Change Agents!

This spring, a cohort of twenty-one parents graduated from the Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI), now in its fifth year. PLTI is a program run by our Family Resource Center using a curriculum from the Connecticut Commission on Children.

Program participants spent four months learning together. In addition to building their leadership skills and exploring issues of diversity, they deepened their understanding of how state and local governments and economic trends affect children. Guest facilitators included local community leaders, the Mayor of West Hartford, and the Superintendent of West Hartford Public Schools.

We remain inspired that each year so many parents and grandparents dedicate themselves to becoming agents of change in our community. Samples of their individual community projects convey their varied interests and the reach they can have as a collective unit as they pursue their individual research:

  • Hot and Hungry--aimed at decreasing hunger during the summer months when children no longer receive meals during the school day;
  • Radical Storytime--aimed at using the storytime model to teach social justice to young children;
  • Start the Conversation--aimed at harnessing the collective knowledge of educators, legislators, and professionals to prevent youth suicide.

The photo above shows Scott Slifka, former Mayor of West Hartford, with the 2016 class of PLTI. Congratulations again to the class of 2016! You strengthen our community and inspire others to be agents of change. For those wishing to learn more about the PLTI program, or if you would like to join the 2017 team, contact Deborah Zipkin at 860.929.5575. The program is free, and childcare and dinner are provided at each session.
