What makes a house a home?

A house is a structure you live in that provides for your basic needs and security. A HOME is a place that offers mental and emotional support, the place you want to be when you need to get away from the outside world. A home has comforting food and a warm bed when you’re weary. It has a yardstick and lines on a door frame because people care how much you grow year after year. A home has a table where people gather to laugh and talk and share a meal. It has music and noise, memories and traditions, familiar smells and people who want you there.

In a home there are no-stress zones; nooks where you can sneak away to calm down and clear your mind. It’s a warm, safe place that you share with friends and family. It’s filled with smiles and happiness in good times and provides comfort in times of sadness. A home is hope and protection that you feel as soon as you walk through the door. The size and decor do not matter—it can be simple or lavish, but either way it’s yours. It’s home.

Even our main office feels like home.

We strive, at the Bridge, to make each one of our seven shelters feel like “home” to our displaced and frightened residents. Most of the teens who come to us know the shelter of a house or an apartment, but have never felt the satisfaction and love of home. Many fear their house; some run away, some are kicked out, and some are abused or abandoned. We are here for each of them. We are here to feed, shelter, comfort, counsel, teach, and protect. We are here for them because we believe in them. And because we believe everyone deserves a HOME.
