Tune-In to Life Week
April 23-30, 2007

We can’t believe it!  20 years!  Tune-In to Life is a week of programs and events to promote healthy drug-free activities, both fun and educational, for all ages.  We invite you to participate in one or more of the planned events.  For more information, call The Bridge at 521-8035.

Papa and Me at the FRC

Drop-in playgroup for children ages birth to 4 and a male parent/guardian at the Charter Oak Academy Family Resource Center (FRC), 425 Oakwood Avenue.  Arts and crafts, snacks, and stories.  Monday, April 23, 6:30-7:30 p.m.  Not just for Charter Oak families—all are welcome.  For more information, call 233-4701.

 

Tune-In to Life 20th Anniversary

Celebration/Thank You Breakfast

The Bridge will celebrate and honor all those who have made 20 years of Tune-In to Life a successful and meaningful week of activities in West Hartford.  Tuesday, April 24, 8:30-9:30 a.m., Town Hall lobby. Breakfast served.  Hosted by Mayor Scott Slifka.
        

Community of Concern Decaf Coffeehouse

Hall and Conard High Schools’ Community of Concern (CoC) invites you to a Decaf Coffeehouse on Tuesday, April 24, 7:00-9:00 p.m., Hall High Cafeteria.  A View into Your Child’s World: What’s Normal/What’s Not? with Bill Kania, LMFT, Wheeler Clinic.  Free and open to the public.  For information, call Hall CoC at 232-4561, ext. 1631 or Conard CoC at 231-5000, ext. 4001.
 

Panera Bread 10% Night for The Bridge

Ten percent of the profits from the sale of food at Panera Bread on Wednesday, April 25, 4:00–9:00 p.m. will be donated to The Bridge Family Center.

 

A Trip Down Memory Lane
Intergenerational Event

Hall High Jazz Band will entertain senior citizens with nostalgic tunes, Thursday, April 26, 3:00-4:30 p.m., St. James’s Episcopal Church auditorium, 1018 Farmington Avenue.  Come sing-along or dance-along.  Panera Bread will provide refreshments.  FREE, but tickets required.  Tickets available: The Bridge (521-8035); West Hartford Senior Center, 15 Starkel Road (561-7583); Elmwood Senior Center, 1106 New Britain Avenue (free transportation by Elmwood Express, 561-8180).

 

Family Dance Party

Family Dance Party for pre-school children and families, Friday, April 27, 7:00-8:00 p.m., at the Bishops Corner Library/Senior Center.  Entertainment by Dale Griffith of Into the Groove.  Refreshments served.  Sponsored by the West Hartford Public Library Children's Division.  FREE tickets available at the Bishops Corner Branch starting Monday, April 9.  Attendance limited.
  

5K Family Fun Run/2K Walk

Saturday, April 28, 9:00 a.m. at MDC Reservoir #1, 1420 Farmington Ave.  For all ages!!  T-shirts to first 125 to pre-register for walk/run.  JuggleJoy Clown Keith Hughes; Goody Bags for children; Raffle.  Sponsored by The Bridge; W.H. Substance Abuse Prevention Commission; Exchange Club; Police Officers’ Association; Leisure Services; Fire Union; and The Fitness Clinic.  Non-measured & non-sanctioned. Family Fun Swim

A morning session of swimming and family fun with Colleen Murphy, therapist/ swimming instructor for The Bridge.  For parents/guardians and children ages 1-10.  Saturday, April 28, 11:00 a.m.-noon, American School for the Deaf pool, 139 North Main Street.  FREE, but sign-up required.  Call The Bridge at 521.8035.

On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 26, 27, & 28, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. on Thursday), Lyn Evans for Potpourri Designs, 973 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford, will donate 10% of their sales to The Bridge Family Center.

 

The Poetry Slam

Poetry Slam at Conard High School, Friday, April 27, periods 6 and 7 (11:48 a.m.-1:22 p.m.).  A poetry slam is a unique event—participants share their writing with an audience of students and teachers; the poetry is generally about personal experiences, thoughts, and opinions; more “confessional” in style.  Competitive slam; judged by staff panel; prizes awarded. 


The Grounds

(A Place for Teens to Chill)

Enjoy a night of comedy, improv, music, Saturday, April 28, 8:00-11:00 p.m., Park Road Playhouse, 233 Park Road.  Free A.C. Tune-Up During Tune-In!

Get Physical!

So you’re not a jock, exercise is not your thing, or you are just in an “I don’t have time” slump.  Take the opportunity to try out a free physical activity during Tune-In to Life week from April 23-30 and try to jumpstart getting in shape and kicking up your energy level.  Free personal weight training session at The Fitness Clinic (236-8344); free water fitness class at Cornerstone Aquatics Center (521-3242 or www.swimcornerstone.com); free yoga class at Center Yoga (860.987.9924 or www.centeryoga.com).

 

Mindful Parenting

How keeping 10 basic rules in “Mind” can help you raise emotionally healthy kids. Monday, April 30, 7:00–8:00 p.m., The Bridge Family Center, 1022 Farmington Avenue.  Fee: $10 per parent.  Facilitated by Bridge therapists Linda Abrahamson, MSW & Jacqueline Newhouse, MSW.  Childcare available.  To register, call 521-8035. 

 

Fifth Grade Poster Project

Fifth grade students will design Tune-In to Life posters—a picture of something they love to do—an alternative to substance abuse.   Posters displayed in many locations around town—Town Hall, local banks, businesses, libraries, etc.  Participants receive a Tune-In to Life T-shirt.  5th grade parents receive a flyer on how to talk to their children about substance abuse.

 

 West Hartford Community Television

The week's programs on WHC-TV will be devoted to the Tune-In to Life theme and youth and family issues.  Programs for the week sponsored by Webster Bank.
