As the Youth Service Bureau for the Town of West Hartford, The Bridge Family Center is responsible for assessment, resource development, community involvement, and advocacy on behalf of children, youth, and families.  These efforts allow The Bridge to provide the following comprehensive prevention and intervention services.

In fiscal year 2007, more than 4,00 children, youth and families were served, including 3,070 youths and 978 adults.

Counseling Services

The Bridge Family Center offers counseling for a broad range of concerns for children, youth, and families in the Hartford region.  The Bridge has several counselors, all of whom have masters’ degrees.  Staff are committed to their continuing growth as professionals.  This commitment is manifested in the high quality of care offered to young people and families.

Weekday, evening and Saturday appointments are available and home visits may be made, if needed.  To schedule an appointment with a counselor, call The Bridge at 521-8035.  Fees are based on a very reasonable sliding scale.

School-Based Services

The Bridge Family Center offers school-based services in collaboration with school personnel.  Services provided include case consultation and crisis intervention; on-site counseling; groups on a variety of issues; speakers on topics of interest for student, staff, or parent groups; and resources and referral.  Bridge staff members serve on Student Assistance Teams (S.A.T.s) and other student support teams.

Positive Youth Development Programs

The Bridge’s Positive Youth Development programs focus on young peoples’ strengths rather than their failings, and offer them hope for the future.  A variety of programs aim to foster a sense of competence, usefulness, and belonging in young people.

·        Positive Youth Development GroupsA variety of groups and programs provide support to young people and facilitate the development of life skills such as leadership, decision-making, stress and anger management, communication, and problem-solving.  Examples of Bridge youth groups are:

ü      Girls’ groups

ü      Boys’ groups

ü      Children of Divorce and Separation

ü      Healthy Relationships

ü      Alternative to Detention/Suspension/Expulsion

ü      Various groups at the Hillcrest Neighborhood Center

ü      Gay/lesbian support group

·   West Hartford Teen Center - Housed in Elmwood Community Center, the Teen Center is a safe, supervised, substance-free drop-in center open to high school age West Hartford teens.  A variety of activities are offered, including basketball, billiards, and monthly special events.

Adventure-Based Learning - Bridge staff members facilitate experiential games and initiatives that focus on communication skills, team building, and conflict resolution.  The Bugbee Ropes Course, located at Bugbee Elementary School, offers students a variety of outdoor adventure activities, including low and high ropes elements, which provide a progression of individual and group challenges.

 

Summer Adventures - The Bridge’s Summer Adventure Program offers middle school students a variety of recreational opportunities.

Parenting Programs

A wide range of parenting programs is offered for families.  In addition, Bridge counselors provide parenting support in individual counseling sessions.

 

Parent Consultation Center - A place to turn for advice, suggestions, or answers when parents have questions about raising children.  A Lending Library offers an excellent selection of parenting books and videos.

 

Parenting Through Swimming – A parenting program that allows a parent or caregiver and child (aged 1-8) to work together in the water under the supervision of an experienced family therapist/aquatics instructor.

 

Living With 10- to 15-Year-Olds - A parenting series designed to provide new information and a better understanding of your changing child.

 

Parenting Workshops - Bridge staff members offer interactive workshops addressing a variety of parenting issues.  displaying challenging behaviors.

·        Parenting Children With ADHD – A support group that helps parents with practical techniques, strategies, and interventions for dealing with your child who is struggling with attention issues and hyperactivity.

Crisis Response Team

The Bridge has a team of mental health professionals who are trained to provide psychological and emotional intervention in the immediate and short-term aftermath of traumatic incidents.  More...

Juvenile Review Board

A representative from The Bridge serves on the West Hartford Juvenile Review Board (JRB).  The JRB provides appropriate and meaningful consequences to first time juvenile offenders with the goal of preventing future delinquent behavior.  Bridge counselors offer family meetings to get to the root cause of why the juvenile is getting into trouble.  Bridge staff also attempt to connect these youth with positive youth development programs.
